What a lovely comment – thank you so much! Yes, do try Brave New World again, but be prepared to be disillusioned a bit, as I was – time has passed, and what was breath-takingly fresh and exciting in Huxley’s day may now seem a bit tired.

I too was taken to see The Devils by a boy-friend – although I was a bit older, 19 and at University – I wasn’t shocked – probably rather bored to be honest and thus I always assumed I’d seen the cut version. However a few years ago I went to a screening in Bath with an introduction by Ken Russell himself and discovered that I had actually seen the full version, Leeds local censors must have been more open mind than I thought or perhaps they were also rather bored. I do remender seeing a TV version of Ape and Essence when I was 13 (The Wednesday Play) and trying to read the book, I read most of Brave New World on a journey bacl from an interview at Newcastle University but never finished it Maybe I should try again? You certainly made me think about my youthful intellectual pretentions and how easily I was distracted from them.

My MA thesis at the University of Minnesota was about the English playwright, John Whiting, whose play The Devils,based on Grandier, was performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company – I think it was 1963, but could check.
