In reply to <a href="https://huguenotjo.co.uk/book-review/versailles-series-iii-the-sun-king-and-the-huguenots/#comment-63">Diana D</a>.

I was tempted to name all the young British actors I would have preferred to see in the role, but thought that might be going a bit far; and of course it would have been entirely subjective.

It raises interesting questions about the extent to which a charismatic lead actor can "carry" a series like this. Aidan Turner (and his horse) have obviously done the trick in "Poldark". It's not all smoke and mirrors.

You can always catch up with the series if you ever need a quick revision session on Louis XIV and that particular period in French history!

Oh dear, I taught George Blagden at Guildhall - a nice boy - he was probably cast because he has French connections and speaks the language, even though that's irrelevant. I've kept thinking I ought to watch, but I think your post has let me off the hook.

I'm also missing the educational five minutes after the frolicing and Lisaelotte is my favourite woman after they killed off the doctor, but I rather like Phillippe, when we saw him this week fighting for his life after an ill-advised atempt to see the man inthe iron mask I thought he was rather convincing. As I don't know much about the period I guess I can imagine Louis as portrayed; both weak and rather manic and then possessed with a burning ambition and not bad with his shirt off either. Sometimes Poldark is just too miserable and I have fond memories of the first series which drove me to the books and to try to persuade my then husband that Demelza was a suitable name for our first born - along with Galadriel, Arwen or Eowyn.
