I found this really moving, Jo. Your unfamiliarity with the Anglican environment, so interesting to "see" it from a different point of view. Your difficult quest to find the Huguenot Chapel - almost Arthurian in miniature - I'm so glad you found it in the nick of time and found some comfort there. Next time - go for it when you see the Archbish!

I was genuinely shocked that so little was made of the Chapel and what it represents. I was at least expecting modern signs outside the Chapel showing the flight of the refugees (there is information inside). It could be a sectarian issue, in that the Church of England isn't Calvinist, or Reformed Church, but nonetheless...I hope Ukrainians will be welcomed by people of all faiths - and micro-sects - and none.

As ever, a fascinating post Jo.

I had no idea about the existence of this chapel and as you so aptly demonstrate, it was an (expensive) and time consuming effort to find it and still more difficult to get in.

What a terrific way to connect to the history both of the Huguenots in general and your own family history. Your photos neatly juxtapose the magnificence and scale of the Cathedral with the simplicity of the Huguenot Chapel.

Was there anything in the chapel about the Huguenots history? Maybe if you run across Justin Welby in the future you might prompt him to put something about that outside the chapel -so less persistant visitors than you might also learn about the Huguenot's flight and welcome by the Canterbury Cathedral community.
It is a reminder to all of us that migrants everywhere- especially those fleeing oppression need help, not just for the material things but the spiritual too - or maybe just a place to regroup, to overcome trauma and through self help and community, find a way to heal.

I wonder whether in future there will be similar arrangements made for the fleeing Orthodox Christian Ukrainians.

I wish I had been with you. Challenging stuffed shirts- of which I came across many in my career- was fun pastime - although Justin Welby, for all the pomp and ceremony surrounding his role, sounds quite down to earth. I am glad the cathedral guides got the word round and enabled you to visit.
